New Book Releases

In a year plagued by disease, quarantine, tiered systems and 10pm curfews; one of the (very) few silver linings of 2020 is the fact that, with more time on their hands, many people seem to have rediscovered their love of reading. As the UK enters a second lockdown, here are some of the new and upcoming book releases to keep us entertained in the coming weeks...

A Promised Land - President Barack Obama

Publication Date: 17th November 2020

“A riveting, deeply personal account of history in the making-from the president who inspired us to believe in the power of democracy.”

This long-awaited book is the first in a two-volume memoir of Obama’s career as President of the United States. Including stories from his childhood right up until the 2011 killing of Osama Bin Laden, Obama discusses the effect of life in the White House on his family and the opposition he faced both internationally and domestically. Labelled by Waterstones as a ‘beautifully written and powerful book’, those still reeling from the 2020 election might like to be reminded of a time when the US political world was not quite so precarious.

Ready Player 2 – Ernest Cline

Publication Date: 24th November 2020

“a bravura mash-up of high-octane gaming adventure and 1980s pop culture”

This is the highly anticipated sequel to Cline’s bestselling first book Ready Player 1 (adapted into a 2018 film directed by Steven Spielberg). In Ready Player 2, the reader returns to the world of Wade Watts and follows him on his journey as he makes a discovery that would change the world. Full of different riddles and quests, the book is a welcome companion to the first and a chance for fans to venture back into Cline’s virtual universe - the perfect way to escape the realities of lockdown!

The Book of Two Ways - Jodi Picoult

Publication Date: 20th October 2020

“with her uncanny ability to provoke a profound emotional reaction in her readers, Picoult delivers another slice of brilliantly affecting storytelling”

From the bestselling author of ‘My Sister’s Keeper’, the story follows Dawn, a death doula, who survives a plane crash and begins to rethink the choices she’s made in her life. She starts to ask questions such as ‘What does a well lived life look like? What do we leave behind when we go? And do we make our choices, or do our choices make us?’ As the Washington Post says, if you’re in the mood to question your own morality, then this is the book for you!

Ghosts - Dolly Alderton

Publication Date: 15th October 2020

“Funny, tender and painfully relatable, filled with whip-smart observations about relationships and the way we live today”

Dolly Alderton is the bestselling author of ‘Everything I know about love’ and co-host of the podcast ‘The High Low’. Her debut novel ‘Ghosts’ is a story that follows Nina Dean, a dating app user and victim of ghosting who, spurred by her father’s dementia diagnosis, starts to consider the gendered double standard that exists in the process of growing old. Described by the Guardian as ‘a sharp-eyed debut’, Alderton’s first fictional novel has received rave reviews and if you haven’t already, lockdown might be the perfect time to get your hands on it.
